My French Whore, Gene Wilder (1935)

so i will go ahead and fess up and admit to reading this entire thing in gene wilder’s voice- and you’ll just have to read it yourself to see if you can make it whole way through without a single wonka thought of your own!

anyway, this is a delightful little adventure/love story concerning the affairs of private peachy- coward, actor, american soldier- who deserts in order to avoid death or capture at the hands of german soldiers in ww2. through good luck and quick thinking he is given the opportunity to salvage his hope by impersonating an infamous spy, leading to a light-hearted, swiftly moving tale of finding true love (with a most admirable whore) and learning of one’s inner fortitude (in the face of some extreme obstacles). funny and sweet, with a message that will make most anyone shake off the dust, stand a little straighter, and trust in their own heart.
